Le XieDr. Le Xie, associate professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Texas A&M University, has been awarded the 2017 Outstanding Young Engineering Award from the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Power & Energy Society (PES) for his contribution to the power systems analytics research and leadership in big data.

The award recognizes researchers like Xie, who are 35 years of age or under, for their leadership in technical society activities, community involvement and significant engineering achievements. Each year only one member is selected from the global IEEE PES community. Xie received a $2,000 scholarship, a plaque and a travel stipend of up to $1,000 to attend the PES meeting and awards ceremony, which will be held in July in Chicago. He will dedicate the scholarship to support the undergraduate program at Texas A&M.

“It’s a great honor and I thank Dr. Xie for his contributions to the success of our department,” said Dr. Miroslav Begovic, department head and Carolyn S. & Tommie E. Lohman ’59 Professor in the electrical and computer engineering department.

Xie is the second faculty in the department to have received this award. Dr. Tom Overbye was recipient of the award in 1993.

Xie received his bachelor’s degree from Tsinghua University, his master’s degree from Harvard University and his doctoral degree from Carnegie Mellon University. Prior to joining Texas A&M, Xie worked with ISO-New England Inc. and Edison Mission Energy. His current research interests include modeling and control of large-scale complex systems, smart grid applications in support of renewable energy integration and electricity markets.

The IEEE PES provides the world's largest forum for sharing the latest in technological developments in the electric power industry, for developing standards that guide the development and construction of equipment and systems and for educating members of the industry and the general public. Members of the Power & Energy Society are leaders in this field.
