The Department of Mechanical Engineering at Texas A&M University recently held a former student outreach event at Aggie Park in San Antonio. Current members of the department’s Industry Advisory Council (IAC) hosted the event.
M. Katherine Banks, vice chancellor and dean of the Dwight Look College of Engineering, as well as current members of the Formula SAE team were on hand for the event. The Formula SAE team showcased this year’s car that it designed and built.
During the event IAC members interacted with former students and sought to find new ways to encourage engagement between the department and its graduates.
“This outreach event is a base for us to build upon,” said IAC member Brenda Hightower. “The IAC understands how important it is to engage former students for their perspectives on different industry needs. It allows us to give timely feedback to the department on the current industry trends graduates of the department face in their various careers.”
Engagement activities will continue to be a fundamental aspect of the department’s contribution to the 25 by 25 initiative which began in 2011. The initiative seeks to increase access for qualified students to pursue engineering education at Texas A&M University. This initiative presents the challenge of continuing to provide quality education while growing the enrollment to 25,000 students by 2025.
Former students in attendance ranged from the Class of ’47 to the Class of ’12.
“The event was a success and I look forward to many more opportunities of its kind,” said Dr. Andreas Polycarpou, head of the department.
