Dr. Krzysztof A. Michalski, associate professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Texas A&M University, has won the 2015 IEEE Antenna and Propagation Sergei A. Schelkunoff Transactions Prize Paper Award.
Michalski won the award, which recognizes the best paper published during the previous year, for his paper titled “On the Plane Wave-Excited Subwavelength Circular Aperture in a Thin Perfectly Conducting Flat Screen,” which was co-authored with a colleague from EPFL, Switzerland, where Michalski is frequently an invited professor.
In the paper, a rigorous analysis is presented of the light transmission through a small, circular aperture in a conducting screen, based on the so-called Bethe-Bouwkamp theory. The utility of this work is in the modeling and better understanding of the operation of aperture-type near-field probes in scanning optical microscopy.
Michalski’s research interests include numerical and analytical methods for the solution of electromagnetic boundary value problems, with emphasis on field interaction with plane-stratified media.
He received his Ph.D. degree from the University of Kentucky in 1981 and a master's degree from the Technical University of Wroclaw, Poland, in 1974, both in electrical engineering. He is a Fellow of IEEE. Other honors include being named a Texas A&M Engineering Experiment Station (TEES) Fellow in 1991, winning the Oliver Lodge Premium Award from IEE (London) in 1986 and the Best EMP Paper Award from the SUMMA Foundation in 1984.
