Mansoor, Malik place third in aluminum paper contest

A paper written by Dr. Bilal Mansoor, assistant professor in the Mechanical Engineering Program, and his research associate Jahanzaib Malik won third prize in the Annual Aluminum Symposium Competition 2014.

Mansoor and Malik’s paper was recognized for the novelty of application, technical content and analysis. In the paper, “Aluminum Shipping Containers: A Prospective Aluminum Application to Reduce CO2 Footprint,” the researchers proposed to substitute steel shipping containers with aluminum to reduce the global carbon footprint. The idea was substantiated by an analytical case study showing a decrease of 8 percent in fuel consumption and 17.2 percent in CO2 emissions.

The Annual Aluminum Symposium Competition 2014 was held at Qatar University 11 Dec. and was organized by Qatalum and Hydro.
