Xie smart gridDr. Le Xie, an assistant professor in the Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering at Texas A&M University, was one of the keynote speakers at the International Workshop on Today's Research for Tomorrow's Grid on Oct. 15-16. The workshop was organized by Tsinghua University in Beijing, China.

Entitled "Closing the Loop Around Smart Grid Data," Xie spoke about intelligent and efficient utilization of big data in the smart grid for better power system operations, a research thrust he has been active with in the past several years along with many of his collaborators.

The two-day workshop gathered academic leaders in the area of the “Future Grid,” including Professor Pravin Varaiya, a U.S. NAE Member, Professor Felix F. Wu of UC Berkeley and Hong Kong University, Professor David Hill of the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences, Professors Qiang Lu and Xiaoxin Zhou, members of the Chinese National Academy of Sciences, and other researchers from premier institutions such as Stanford University, UC Berkeley and Argonne National Laboratory.

The host institution, Tsinghua University, has been consistently regarded by both domestic and international university rankings as the top research university in both China and Asia.

Xie joined the Texas A&M faculty in January 2010. He received his bachelor's degree in electrical engineering in 2004 from Tsinghua University in Beijing, China, his master's degree in engineering sciences from Harvard University in 2005 and his Ph.D. from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University in 2009. His research interests include modeling and control of large-scale power systems with renewable energy resources and electricity markets. Xie received the NSF CAREER Award and the Oak Ridge Associated Universities Ralph E. Powe Junior Faculty Award in 2012. Other honors include winning best paper awards and he also served as the founding faculty advisor for the Texas A&M Energy Club.
