The team, which consists of 17 civil engineering majors and one aerospace engineering major, earned a spot in the national competition by winning the Texas-Mexico regional competition that was held at the University of Texas at Tyler in April. This is the first time since 2006 that a team from Texas A&M has made it to the national competition.

The national competition consists of four parts: submitting a technical paper, completing an oral presentation, presenting a display of the canoe and competing in five separate races that consist of both short distances and tests of endurance.
