Dr. Jean-Louis Briaud, the Spencer J. Buchanan Chair in the Zachry Department of Civil Engineering, has been selected as a Distinguished Member of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), the Society’s highest honor.
ASCE, representing 145,000 members worldwide, selected 11 members for its 2014 Distinguished Member class. The new members will be formally inducted at the Global Engineering Conference in Panama City, Panama this fall.
Briaud was nominated and selected for “his varied and pioneering contributions in the field of geotechnical engineering and for his eminent leadership and international service to the geotechnical engineering profession.” Briaud also serves as the program manager for the Geotechnical and Geoenvironmental Group at the Texas A&M Transportation Institute. He has served in various leadership roles, including acting president of the Federation of International Geo-engineering Societies and past president of the International Society of Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering. With his selection, Briaud becomes one of 649 Distinguished Members selected for this honor during the ASCE’s 162 year history.
“It’s always nice to be called ‘distinguished,’” Briaud jokes. “But, seriously, this is a huge honor — certainly a highlight of my career. I’m looking forward to the ceremony in Panama, which coincides with the 100 year anniversary of the Panama Canal.”
