CSE at Aggieland Saturday 2014

aggiesat.jpgAggieland Saturday is Texas A&M University’s annual open house where current students and staff of the University get a chance to introduce to prospective students and their families what Texas A&M is all about. Prospective students have the opportunity to tour the dorms, visit libraries and research labs on campus, and also learn about individual programs and majors offered. Financial aid and scholarship information is also available to students. It is a wonderful opportunity for prospective students and current students to come together

This year, Aggieland Saturday was held on February 15, 2014. The Department of Computer Science and Engineering’s booth was located in the Zachry Engineering Center. Current CSE students had a lot of fun as they welcomed prospective students to the Aggie family. Bekah Holle, senior office assistant for the department, directed the event. Alongside her were 26 student volunteers who helped make the entire day a success.

There was also a seminar held in the Bright Building (HRBB) called “Calling the Computer Science and Engineering Class of 2018” at which Interim Department Head Dr. Nancy Amato, gave a welcome speech. There, Dr. Jennifer Welch also spoke to the students and parents about ACE Scholars, which is the department’s honors program. At this seminar a CSE student panel, led by Dr. John Keyser, Associate Department Head for Academics was available to the visitors. He asked the students in the panel to introduce themselves, to explain why they chose to attend Texas A&M, and to share some experiences that have stood out to them, along with advice that they would give to incoming freshman.

Student organizations such as Upsilon Pi Epsilon, Texas Aggie Game Developers, and Aggie Women in Computer Science were also there from the CSE department, which gave prospective students the opportunity to get a glimpse into how current students get involved.

With the success of Aggieland Saturday, CSE hopes to welcome many new students to the department and to the University.
