Jaime GrunlanDr. Jaime Grunlan, the Gulf Oil/Thomas A. Dietz Career Development Professor at Texas A&M University, has been appointed an editor of the Journal of Materials Science.

The journal, which is a cornerstone journal in the field of materials science and engineering, is published by Springer and is the company’s second most-cited journal with 31,500 citations per year. Overall, Springer publishes more than 2,000 journals.

“It’s a big honor to have been invited to be an editor of JMS,” Grunlan said. “Chris Cornelius (University of Nebraska), Steve Eichhorn (University of Exeter), Greg Rutledge (MIT) and myself will be working hard to fill the shoes of Robert Young (University of Manchester), who is retiring after many years of service to the journal.

“We four will be the team tasked with ‘polymer’ manuscripts. The impact factor has been rising rapidly under the leadership of C. Barry Carter (University of Connecticut), editor-in-chief of JMS. I expect this trend to continue with the strong editorial team that’s been established.”

Grunlan is an associate professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, with joint appointments in the interdisciplinary Department of Materials Science and Engineering and the Artie McFerrin Department of Chemical Engineering. He joined the Texas A&M Engineering faculty in 2004 after receiving a bachelor’s degree from North Dakota State University and a Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota.

In 2007, he received the prestigious National Science Foundation (NSF) CAREER award for his research into controlling the microstructure of high aspect ratio nanoparticles (e.g. carbon nanotubes) using stimuli-responsive polymers.

In 2012, Grunlan received the L.E. Scriven Young Investigator Award from the International Society of Coating Science and Technology “for innovative and high-impact research into coating methods and materials for barrier, flame resistance and electronic applications.” He also received the 2010 Carl Dahlquist Award from the Pressure Sensitive Tape Council.
