The Texas A&M University Colleges of Engineering and Science present their sixth annual Teacher Summit on January 30-31, 2014, with registration and a welcoming reception on the 30th. General sessions and workshops begin on Friday (1/31) and are held in the College Station Hilton Hotel and Conference Center.
Teacher Summit partners Texas A&M with teachers from all over the state to discuss the current shortage of K12 students seeking careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).
Associate Professor Dr. Tracy Hammond, director of the Sketch Recognition Lab in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at Texas A&M, is hosting a workshop session entitled, "Interactive Sketching with Intelligent Educational Applications," on Friday morning at 9:45 a.m.
"Sketching plays an important part in the learning process for a variety of subjects ranging from science to language," said Dr. Hammond. "With the growing ubiquity and falling costs of stylus-enabled tablets for education, it opens up the possibilities of expanding the current classroom curriculum with intelligent educational applications that incorporate interactive sketching. This session will first introduce the benefits of intelligent educational applications inside and outside the classroom with interactive sketching, and then expose you to several hands-on interactions of such emerging intelligent educational applications for different classroom subjects."
As an educator, Dr. Hammond's larger goal is to instill in students a passion for lifelong learning. She has organized several workshops and conferences, and is currently the local chair for the upcoming international Workshop on the Impact of Pen and Touch Technology in Education ( WIPPTE 2014) to be held at Texas A&M University on March 12-14.
