Texas A&M University at Qatar researcher Kamel Tourki (pictured, fourth from right) has been named a recipient of the prestigious Outstanding Young Researcher award the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) EMEA regional awards recognitions.

This award honors researchers who have been very active in the IEEE through Communications Society publication and conference activities over the last three years. The IEEE Communications Society Young Researcher Award for the Europe, Middle East, and Africa Region is sponsored by the IEEE Europe Middle East and Africa (EMEA) Region.

Tourki, a researcher in the Texas A&M at Qatar Wireless Research Group (WRG),congratulated his fellow researchers and thanked them for their support.

“Although the contest considered only individual research profiles, I think without the help of our team, I would have never been awarded,” he said.

“No matter who carries the flag, this is great for Texas A&M at Qatar and Qatar. At the end, the most important thing is that we honored our commitment as a young research group and showed that Texas A&M at Qatar and Qatar National Research Fund (QNRF) deserve the best,” he added.

The university’s Wireless Research Group (WRG) works in different areas of fundamental and applied research in wireless communications, wireless system design and emerging wireless applications. The research conducted by the group members is funded by Qatar National Research Fund (QNRF), Texas A&M at Qatar, Ooredoo Qatar and RasGas. All M.Sc. and Ph.D. candidates are supervised by world-renowned faculty and staff who utilize the latest measurement and analysis equipment to carry out their research. Undergraduate research and senior design projects are conducted and supervised within this group as well.

Dr. Khalid Qaraqe, professor of electrical and computer engineering at Texas A&M at Qatar, leads the WRG. He lauded Tourki’s innovative work, saying, “I want to take this opportunity to personally congratulate Dr. Kamel and my team for receiving the Outstanding Young Researcher award. This award honors researchers who have been very active in the IEEE through publications and conference activities over the last three years.”

Qaraqe said such awards give good insight on the quality of research conducted at Texas A&M at Qatar.

“Indeed, this type of achievement will boost the research reputation of Qatar,” he said. “This is also a testimony to the high quality of research in wireless communication at Qatar. I would like to thank QNRF and Texas A&M at Qatar for their great support. ”
