Duncan Maitland receives Rising Star Award for commercialization efforts

Maitland, DuncanCOLLEGE STATION, Texas, June 6, 2013 – Duncan J. Maitland, associate professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Texas A&M University, has been named recipient of The Research Valley Commercialization Rising Star Award as part of the Bryan Rotary Newman 10 Business Performance Awards.

The award recognizes an individual in The Research Valley for entrepreneurial spirit and introductory work in taking ideas to the marketplace and is presented by the Bryan Rotary Club in cooperation with the Bryan-College Station Chamber of Commerce and The Research Valley Partnership.

Maitland was honored with the award for demonstrating innovation in the commercialization of a new class of biomaterials to treat aneurysms that resulted in the launch of Shape Memory Therapeutics, Inc., of which he is founder and chief technology officer.

"There are people walking around with aneurysms that are untreatable...my hope is to build a company that commercializes a game-changing therapy that lessens the risks of aneurysm ruptures, increases patient safety and makes an impact on human health care," Maitland said. 

Maitland, who completed his undergraduate career and earned his master’s degree in physics at Cleveland State University, earned his Ph.D. at Northwestern University in 1995. He joined Texas A&M in 2008 after working at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. He has worked as an engineer in aerospace, national defense and biomedical applications; has nine patents; and has commercialized three medical devices. 

At Texas A&M, Maitland’s research focuses novel treatments of cardiovascular disease with a focus on stroke. His research projects include endovascular interventional devices, microactuators, optical therapeutic devices and basic device-body interactions/physics including computational and experimental techniques.

Maitland, who is holder of the William Keeler Faculty Fellowship, also is director of graduate programs in the Department of Biomedical Engineering and serves as senior scientist at the Texas A&M Institute for Preclinical Studies (TIPS). In addition, Maitland is a member of Research Valley Funds, LLC and the Aggie Angel Network.
