Roger J. McNichols Memorial Scholarship established at Texas A&M

The Roger J. McNichols ’98 Memorial Scholarship in Biomedical Engineering has been established to honor the memory of the former student.

McNichols, who maintained close ties with the department after earning his Ph.D. in 1998, passed away Dec. 3, 2012.

Dr. Gerard Coté, head of the Department of Biomedical Engineering, and his wife, Iris, personally contributed funds to establish the scholarship, which will be funded through the Texas A&M Foundation, with the remaining balance to be contributed by friends, family, classmates and colleagues of McNichols. The fund will be used to provide one or more scholarships to full-time students in good standing pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree in biomedical engineering from Texas A&M with preference given to students doing translational work, that have a propensity for entrepreneurism and/or a passion for taking more than the required classes to truly expand the breadth of their education.

"Roger McNichols was my former Ph.D. student, business partner, colleague and friend,” Coté said. “He was one of the brightest people I knew, a true entrepreneur, and had a passion for working on solutions to medical problems that make a difference in people's lives. He also believed in going the extra mile and taking courses that expanded his knowledge beyond what was merely required. I believe this scholarship honors his memory by providing funding for future entrepreneurial students that truly embrace learning beyond minimum requirements.”
