Jung Hwan Woo, a Ph.D. student in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Texas A&M University, won the Graduate Student Presentation Award at the Joint Fall 2012 Meeting of the Texas Sections of the American Physics Society, American Association of Physics Teachers and Zone 13 of Society of Physics Students.
The meeting focuses on physics education. Woo, a Ph.D. student of Dr. Rusty Harris, won the Graduate Student Presentation Award for his paper, “Energy Efficient Tunnel Transistors Using Dielectric-Gated Band Engineered Tunnel Junctions.”
In their paper Woo, Harris and co-author Iman Rezanejad outline the impact of band-to-band tunneling behavior in InGaAs/Ge that is modulated by HfO2 gate on the thin InGaAs side because they feel low-standby power in transistors can be improved with steep sub-threshold tunnel transistors. Woo is currently working on his Ph.D. in electrical engineering. His research area includes designing and processing III-V/N tunneling devices and material/device characterizations. He received a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering with physics minor from University of Utah.
