Civil engineering to hold 20th Buchanan Lecture

The Zachry Department of Civil Engineering at Texas A&M University will hold its 20th Buchanan Lecture Nov. 30 at the College Station Hilton at 2 p.m. in Ballrooms 1 and 2. 

The 2012 Buchanan Lecturer is Dr. Allen Marr, president and CEO of Geocomp Corp. Marr’s lecture will be, “Active Risk Management in Geotechnical Engineering.”

The 2012 Buchanan Lecture will be preceded by the Terzaghi Lecture delivered by Dr. Kenneth Stokoe, professor of civil engineering at the University of Texas at Austin. The title of Stokoe’s lecture is, “Seismic Measurements and Geotechnical Engineering.”

The lecture series is organized by Dr. Jean-Louis Briaud, holder of the Spencer J. Buchanan Chair in Civil Engineering. The annual lecture was started in 1993 to honor Buchanan, who graduated from Texas A&M in 1926 with a civil engineering degree, then founded the Soil Mechanics Division of the civil engineering department at Texas A&M, and was named Professor Emeritus in 1969.
