Biomedical engineering students receive Outstanding Poster Awards

Shelton -aklBiomedical Engineering graduate student Tony Akl (pictured on the right) and recent Ph.D. graduate Ryan Shelton won Outstanding Poster Awards at the 2012 Gordon Research Conference on Lasers in Medicine and Biology July 26.

Started in 1965, the conference is one of the premier scientific meetings for creative research. Conference sessions encourage scientific exchange between biomedical optics researchers from academic labs, clinical research, commercial enterprises and national laboratories. Held every two years, the conference is by invitation only. Akl and Shelton were among 168 invited to participate in this year’s conference.

Akl won the Outstanding Poster Award for his presentation, “Monitoring Liver Transplants using Near-Infrared Photoplethysmorgraphy.” Akl is a member of the Optical Biosensing Lab working under the supervision of Dr. Gerard L. Coté, and his research focuses on optical sensing and diagnostics. Specifically, he is working on implantable sensors to monitor perfusion and oxygenation in implanted livers in the early post-transplant period.

Shelton won the Outstanding Poster Award for his presentation, “Advances in Molecular Contrast for Photoacoustic Microscopy and Optical Coherence Tomography.” Shelton, who graduated in August, will continue his post-doctoral research at the University of Illinois. As a graduate student in the department of biomedical engineering, he worked in the Laboratory for Optical and Molecular Imaging under the supervision of Dr. Brian Applegate. His primary research area was high-resolution molecular imaging using photo-acoustic microscopy, and his research included various applications of optical coherence tomography.
