John C. Vassberg, a Texas A&M aerospace engineering graduate and Boeing technical fellow, received top honors from the American Institute of Aerodynamics and Astronautics (AIAA) for his achievements in the field of applied aerodynamics.
Vassberg, who works for Boeing Research & Technology in Huntington Beach, Calif., received the AIAA Aerodynamics Award for his notable contributions in development, application and evaluation of aerodynamic concepts and methods, most recently for his work on a new winglet design concept for the 737 MAX.
“I am very thrilled about this recognition,” said Vassberg, who has worked for 30 years at Boeing. “Receiving the AIAA Aerodynamics Award is quite the honor. Past recipients include great pioneers in the field of applied aerodynamics and aircraft design, and as such, this has been a very humbling experience.”
Vassberg has 12 patents and several more pending, and has pioneered new fields of study in aerodynamics. He is currently supporting Boeing Commercial Airplanes to enhance cruise performance for the 747-8, new airplane studies and advanced airfoil and wing technologies. Within BR&T, Vassberg supports NASA projects researching the Blended-Wing-Body program and the Super Ultra Green Aircraft Research concepts.
Vassberg earned a Bachelor of Science (1980) and Master of Science in aerospace engineering (1981) from Texas A&M University, and a doctorate from University of Southern California in 1992.
