Texas A&M University's Gamma Mu chapter of Eta Kappa Nu received the Outstanding Chapter Award for 2010-2011.

Eta Kappa Nu (HKN) is the electrical and computer engineering honor society of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).

"This coveted award is a mark of great distinction for a college chapter," said Alan Lefkow, national chair for the Outstanding Chapter Award, in his award letter.

Chapters are judged on their activities of service to others, and chapters with exemplary programs can win the award.

Currently, the Gamma Mu chapter of HKN at Texas A&M has more than 60 members, including electrical and computer engineering undergraduates, graduates and professionals. In its annual report submitted to the awards committee they stressed three key goals: to improve the quality of membership in the organization, to increase the amount of service provided by chapter to the electrical and computer engineering department, and to increase the number of inducted members each semester.

To accomplish these goals, Gamma Mu continues to host many successful events and has inducted numerous motivated students into the chapter. For the first time the chapter also inducted graduate students.

"As president of HKN at Texas A&M, I have made it a personal goal for the chapter to extend its outreach and work above and beyond status quo," Chris Jagielski said.

Among the numerous service events HKN participated in or volunteered for were Student Research Week, Discover ECE (a departmental recruiting event), replant, The Big Event (the largest, one-day, student-run service project in the nation) and the USA Science & Engineering Festival. They also provided numerous social events that include Red Mango (a frozen yogurt profit-share event), a bowling/mini-golf social, an Aggie Baseball game, and a pizza meet, eat and greet.

HKN at Texas A&M also provides opportunities for its students to meet and learn from companies. In addition to creating a resume book and corporate packet for companies and sponsors, HKN and has organized field trips to some of these companies.

The award plaque for Gamma Mu Chapter will be formally announced and presented to the chapter at the ECEDHA Annual Meeting Award banquet March 26.
