Girimaji has been a professor in the Department of Aerospace Engineering for 11 years. Girimaji's research effort has involved investigating complex flow and aerodynamics problems and he has developed various models that have been implemented in solving these problems, especially in hypersonic turbulence.

Girimaji received his Ph.D. from Cornell University in 1990. He is a Fellow of the American Physical Society and an Associate Fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics. Girimaji has been named a TEES Special Research Fellow in 2001, TEES Fellow in 2006, Brockett Professor in 2006 and Dow Chemical Fellow in 2007.
