Briaud travels to Taiwan, Eastern Europe and Moscow as ISSMGE president

Dr. Jean‐Louis Briaud, the Spencer J. Buchanan Chair in the Zachry Department of Civil Engineering at Texas A&M University, recently traveled to Taiwan, Moscow and Eastern Europe as president of ISSMGE, the International Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering.Dr. Jean-Louis BriaudIn Taipei, Taiwan, Briaud visited with geotechnical engineers and participated in the 17th South East Asia Geotechnical Society (SEAGS) Conference. At the conference Briaud delivered a lecture on bridge foundation scour and visited with many practicing engineers. In a special session he discussed the future of geotechnical engineering with 25 young members. A series of meeting took place between Briaud and various dignitaries, including the vice premier of Taiwan, the president of South East Asia Geotechnical Society and the president of the Chinese Taipei Geotechnical Society. Briaud also visited the National Taiwan University and National Chiao Tung University. He also visited one of the tallest towers of the world, Taipei 101.Briaud also traveled to Brno, Czech Republic, and Bratislava, Slovakia, to visit with geotechnical engineers and participate in two conferences, the 20th European Young Geotechnical Engineers Conference in Brno and the 14th Danube-European Conference on Geotechnical Engineering in Bratislava. Briaud gave talks at both conferences and met with various dignitaries. And finally in Moscow, Briaud met with geotechnical engineers and participated in the International Conference on Geotechnical Challenges in Megacities. The conference was organized with participation of several ISSMGE technical committees on deep foundations, underground construction in soft ground, engineering practice of risk assessment and management, soil-structure interaction, and geotechnical infrastructure for megacities and new capitals. At the conference Briaud delivered a lecture on excavation support using deep soil mixing and visited with practicing engineers. The ISSMGE is the preeminent professional body representing the interests and activities of engineers, academics and contractors all over the world who actively participate in geotechnical engineering.
