TAMUite named outstanding student chapter

TAMUite, Texas A&M's student chapter of the Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE), has been recognized by the Texas District of ITE.The Texas A&M Student Chapter of the Institute of Transportation Engineers (TAMUite) received the Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE) Texas District 2010 Outstanding Student Chapter Award.TAMUite was selected for the award over eight other student chapters from across the state, including Texas Tech University, Southern Methodist University, and the University of Texas at Austin. The award was given at the ITE Texas District Summer Meeting in Sugar Land June 18.The award is given to the outstanding student chapter from the Texas District on the merits of its chapter activities as accounted in each chapter's annual report submitted every April.The award was accompanied by a $150 donation to TAMUite from the ITE Texas District."This award means so much to our chapter. We strive to make our organization one through which students can enrich their lives technically, professionally, and socially. We are so grateful that the ITE Texas District sees this," said chapter president Kristopher Ball.Faculty advisor Dr. Gene Hawkins, an associate professor in the Zachry Department of Civil engineering, said, "I'm very proud of what the TAMUite chapter has accomplished. They are a dedicated and hard-working group of students that developed ambitious plans for the year and followed through with the execution of those plans. Their success is another indication of the quality of students in transportation engineering at Texas A&M University."TAMUite has won the award 13 times since 1985, most recently in 2008. As the winner of a District-level Outstanding Student Chapter Award, TAMUite will be considered alongside outstanding chapters from nine other ITE districts for the 2010 International Student Chapter Award, which TAMUite has received five times in its history.2010 has been a banner year for TAMUite as they also won the ITE Texas District Collegiate Traffic Bowl at the Texas District Winter Meeting in January.
