Aggie petroleum engineering students win regional paper contest

Two students in the Harold Vance Department of Petroleum Engineering at Texas A&M University won first place in their divisions at the Society of Petroleum Engineers Gulf Coast Region Student Paper Contest April 10 in Lubbock.Master's student Matt Freeman placed first in the M.S. division, and Ph.D. student Ahmed Gomaa placed first in the Ph.D. division. Both will compete at the SPE International Student Paper Contest in Florence, Italy, in the fall.Placing third in the undergraduate division was senior Russell Greco.Other members of the team were Ph.D. student Alvaro Rey, M.S. student Nerwing Diaz and B.S. student Robert Glenn.Dr. John Lee, the L.F. Peterson Chair and Regents Professor, and Darla-Jean Weatherford coached the team.To qualify for regional competition, the students must have finished in the top two at the local competition, which was held on campus in February.Sponsors donated almost $50,000 to support the local contest and the team's travel to the regional contest in Lubbock.
