Requirements for students starting prior to Fall 2014

The requirements below pertain to students starting the program prior to Fall 2014. For students starting Fall 2014 or after, there are different requirements.

 

Ph.D. entering with a B.S. Degree Requirements

Undergraduate or graduate leveling courses, assigned on an individual basis, as needed. (1-12 Credits)

MSEN 604 Quantum Mechanics for Materials Scientists and Engineers (Prerequisite: MATH 601, MATH 311, or instructor approval.)
MSEN 603 Fundamentals of Soft and Biomaterials
MSEN 602 Advanced Materials Science and Engineering (Prerequisite: MATH 601, undergraduate course in quantum mechanics, MSEN 604, or approval of instructor.)
Designated Electives Five courses from the designated electives list
Free Electives 2; on an individual basis, the student will consult with his/her advisor/committee to choose electives appropriate to research area
Mathematics Two mathematics courses selected from MATH 311, MATH 601 ; other graduate-level mathematics course; PHYS 615, PHYS 616, CHEN 604
Seminar MSEN 681 Seminar - 3 credit hours
Total Semester Credit Hours Required for Degree96

The Ph.D. advisory committee must consist of four members, including at least three members of the MSEN faculty and one member outside the home department of the student's advisor.

Note: The College of Engineering stipulates that MS students with no degree plan on file will be blocked from registration after completion of 30 credit hours.

Ph.D. entering with an M.S. Degree Requirements

Undergraduate or graduate prerequisite/leveling courses, assigned on an individual basis, as needed. (0-12 Credits)

  • MSEN 684, 685, 691 do not count as free electives.
