Master's Degrees in Industrial and Systems Engineering
The master's degrees are attractive to students who want to enhance their competitiveness in the job market and expand their career options, or continue on to the Ph.D. degree. The department offers three master's degrees: a Master of Science (M.S. in IE) in industrial engineering, a Master of Engineering (M.Eng. in IE) in industrial engineering, and a Master of Science in engineering systems management (M.S. in ENSM). The degrees provide necessary structure as well as are flexibility, allowing a broad coverage of industrial and systems engineering fundamentals together with a wide choice in course selection and emphasis areas.
Ph.D. of Industrial and Systems Engineering
The Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering offers a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Industrial Engineering. The Ph.D. degree is a research-oriented degree for individuals interested in a career in academia, consulting, or with an organization requiring advanced training. With the advice and approval of his/her advisory committee, the student can develop a degree plan which matches his/her own professional interests.
Master of Engineering in Industrial Engineering
The M.Eng. in Industrial Engineering degree is a non-thesis degree requiring at least 30 credit hours. M.Eng. in I.E. is a structured, professional-oriented master’s degree to cover basic knowledge sets, methods and tools in industrial engineering. Students are free to select their own in-department and out-of- department elective courses. Students pursuing this degree usually focus on entering the industry after graduation, though many Ph.D. programs now also accept M.Eng. degrees for admission. Master of Science in Engineering Systems Management
The M.S. in Engineering Systems Management is a non-thesis degree requiring at least 36 credit hours. This degree is principally chosen by students wishing to enter the industry after graduation, though some Ph.D. programs will accept this degree for admission. The M.S. in ENSM is a structured master’s degree program, covering both systems engineering and engineering management knowledge and tools. Students are free to select their own in-department and out-of- department elective courses, with the potential to also earn a professional certificate in areas such as business, safety engineering, or statistics, while getting the ENSM degree; see ENSM requirements. Master of Science in Industrial Engineering
The M.S. in Industrial Engineering degree is principally chosen by students interested in continuing for a Ph.D. degree and requires courses in the areas of linear programming, nonlinear programming, statistics, and mathematical probability. The thesis option requires at least 32 credit hours including no fewer than two, but no more than six, ISEN 691 hours. The non-thesis option requires at least 36 credit hours.

Both the M. Eng. in IE and the M.S. in ENSM are available via distance learning (DL). The distance learning programs are for off-campus students who desire to pursue a degree without having to leave their homes or jobs. Ph.D. of Industrial and Systems Engineering
The traditional Ph.D. degree plan for the student who already has a master's degree must contain at least 64 credit hours, including credit for dissertation research hours. We also offer the Ph.D. for direct-entry study, allowing a student with only a Bachelor’s degree to apply, effectively bypassing the Master’s degree. If a student holds only a bachelor's degree, a total of at least 96 hours is required.
Doctoral students must maintain a 3.0 official GPR and a 3.0 GPR on degree plan courses. The dissertation is expected to be suitable for publication in a peer-reviewed (scholarly) journal.
Ph.D. students are required to take three major exams: the qualifying exam, the preliminary exam (taken within 6 credit hours of the completion of formal coursework), and the final exam (also known as the defense). A formal proposal presentation is also required of each Ph.D. student.
