Please follow the guidelines below to apply for the Undergraduate Summer Research REU Program.

Application Deadline: February 16, 2024

Applicant/Participant Eligibility

  1. Have an interest in and a desire to actively participate in ongoing research projects.
  2. Preference is given to students with at least a 3.25 cumulative GPA.
  3. Be a U.S. resident or a permanent resident.
    • International students may apply only if currently enrolled at an accredited U.S. institution
  4. Major in engineering, or STEM-related curriculum.
  5. Have completed at least freshman year (30 hours) by spring 2024.
  6. Graduate no sooner than December 2023.
  7. Exceptions to the above (excluding graduation requirement and residency requirement) will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.

Application Packet Requirements

  1. Unofficial Transcript(s) —   submit through application 
    • Both Texas A&M students and external applicants MUST upload unofficial college transcripts that reflect grades up to summer 2022.
    • Texas A&M applicants should submit the unofficial transcript (PDF version) found on the Howdy portal.
  2. Personal Statement (minimum 500 words) —  submit through application
    • At the top, list one or two departments for which you would like to be considered. Applicants can list up to two departments due to the interdisciplinary nature of some research projects.
    • What do you hope to gain from this experience, and what is/are your objective(s) in participating in a research experience/USRG program?
    • What are your career plans after completing your undergraduate degree?
    • Describe any previous or current research experience.
    • Describe your research area(s) of interests within your field/major.
    • Provide any other relevant information (student organizations, leadership, employment, honors, awards, etc.) that will help the selection committee in their decision.

    Faculty Mentor (for external applicants) — 
    Although finding a faculty mentor at the time of application is optional for non-Texas A&M students, you are highly encouraged to research faculty members through department websites, communicate with them and mention an interest in working with them in your personal statement. Contact usrg@tamu.edu  if you have questions about this.

    Faculty Mentor (for current Texas A&M students) — All current Texas A&M University - College Station students are required to find a faculty mentor at the time of application. Approval is required from the faculty mentor via one of the two recommendation letters indicating the willingness to serve as your mentor during the duration of the summer, should you be accepted. 

Review and Selection

All completed application packets will be reviewed by respective department selection committees, including, but not limited to, the department head, associate head, undergraduate advisor(s), graduate advisor(s) and faculty representatives. Final selections will be reviewed by the REU program.
