Microsoft Dreamspark for Academic Institutions (CSCE Only)

Welcome! You have been registered in your university/college Microsoft Dreamspark for Academic Institutions software system. Here you can download and access a wide range of Microsoft developer tools, servers, and platforms. There is no charge to download the software as long as you are an eligible user.

How Does it Work?

Your university/college is licensed under the Microsoft Dreamspark for Academic Institutions Program which enables eligible students and faculty members to access software available under the Program. This wiki pertains only to the CSCE departmental licensing.

Eligibility

Students who are CSCE majors.

Students who are enrolled and attending any CSCE course.

Staff and Faculty employed by the Department of Computer Science and Engineering.

Microsoft Dreamspark for Academic Institutions Accounts

If eligible, an account is created using the user's CSE email address as an account name, example: user@cse.tamu.edu . An introductory email is sent to this email address upon creation.

This email gives the user their password for their account.

Activation and De-activation

For students, account activation or creation begins at the end of the Add Class period at the first of a semester. The department submits a list of eligible students. The activation/creation by Microsoft may take up to 3 day. Student accounts are de-activated or disabled within 15 days after the semester ends.

Faculty and staff are activated upon request. De-activation is done when faculty or staff are no longer employed by the department.

No email is sent when de-activating or re-activating an account, only upon creation.

Remember, your account name will be your CSCE username@cse.tamu.edu. Follow the instructions given by the website at this point.

If you have any technical difficulties while downloading the software, please go to the support section in the website and click on Request Customer Support. Technical support is provided by your Dreamspark Program Administrator at your school and is primarily limited to Windows 7 and Visual Studio 2010.

Microsoft Dreamspark (Personal, not department affiliated)

A new alternative for downloading free software from Microsoft is Microsoft's DreamSpark website:

https://www.dreamspark.com

Through this website, any student can download Microsoft software like the newest versions of:

  • Visual Studio
  • Windows Server
  • SQL Server
  • Robotics Developer Studio

Microsoft uses Akamai (http://www.akamai.com/) to host large files like the ISOs for the programs above. TAMU hosts an Akamai server, so downloading the iso from dreamspark's website shouldn't take longer than 45 minutes since the file is coming from inside TAMU. It would take about the same amount of time to transfer it from a local server.

At this time, treat this service as having no connection to the services provided by Microsoft Dreamspark for Academic Institutions and can not be supported by the department's Computer Services Group (CSG).
