Research Interests

Alan D. Freed is professor of mechanical engineering at Texas A&M University. His research interests center on the mathematical modeling of soft biological tissues from a continuum perspective, and its enabling technologies. In particular, hypo-elastic and implicit-elastic theories have been developed for describing the elastic attributes of tissue, while the fractional calculus has been employed to analytically continue his theories into the viscoelastic domain. Prior research interests include viscoplastic theories for rocket and jet engine applications, and numerical methods for the fractional calculus, for convolution integrals, and for stiff differential equations. Dr. Freed has published numerous research articles in the engineering, computer science and applied mathematics literatures, plus a textbook titled Soft Solids. He has served on several editorial boards, was chair of the Materials Division of ASME, and is a fellow of ASME, plus he is a recipient of the NASA medal for exceptional service.
