Changing Majors

Newly Admitted Students

New freshmen who are admitted to any major in the college of engineering may request a change of major in one of two ways:

  1. Access the Office of Admissions and Records Applicant Information System (AIS) at
    http://applicant.tamu.edu
  2. Submit a written request at least ten (10) business days prior to your scheduled New Student Conference. The written request should be sent to the Office of Admissions and Records, Admissions Processing, P.O. Box 30014, College Station, TX 77842-3014 and should contain your full name, UIN and date of birth. In addition, you must include the major to which you were admitted AND the major that you are requesting.

Since many of the majors in the college of engineering reach capacity when new freshmen are admitted, a change of major into many of the engineering programs will not be an option. Students may check http://applicant.tamu.edu to view the status of change of major requests. Please be aware that it may not be possible to grant your request to change your major. This process must be completed before the student attends a new student conference.

Currently Enrolled Students

Change of Curriculum within the College of Engineering

  • Students are encouraged to meet first with their current departmental academic advisor and discuss their intent to change majors.
  • Students should then meet with the departmental academic advisor of the major the student would like to change into.
  • If the new department agrees to accept the student, the new department will handle the required paperwork and will officially enter the change in university records.

Change of Curriculum Involving Two Colleges

  • Students should visit the departmental academic advisor of the major the student wishes to change into.
  • If accepted, that department will handle the paperwork and will officially enter the change in university records.

Change of Curriculum Into General Academics

Students who wish to change into the Department of General Academic Programs (GEST - General Studies), should know that GEST is designed for students with fewer than 60 passed semester hours (with a minimum GPA of 2.0) who are uncertain about their choice of major.

Minimum Requirements

The table below includes the minimum requirements for requesting a change of major into College of Engineering majors. Other factors may be considered and decisions to accept students will be made as space is available. Questions about requirements should be directed to the appropriate departmental undergraduate academic advisor.
